All human rights violations in the past have gone untried."Semarang, Central Java (ANTARA News) - Indonesia needs to adopt a transitional justice model so past human rights violations do not go without a trial, said the Chief of the ASEAN Parliament for Human Rights (APHR), Eva Kusuma Sundari.
"All human rights violations in the past have gone untried," she stated in a short message text on Wednesday.
Earlier, Eva told a seminar on cross-country inter-party collaboration organized by the Indonesian Community for Democratization (KID) in Jakarta on Tuesday that the Indonesian democracy is yet to serve as a model for transitional justice and welfare.
If justice and welfare are indicators of substantial democracy, Indonesia clearly cannot serve as a model for Myanmar, she noted.
Unlike democratization in Latin America and Timor Leste, transitional justice has never been carried out in Indonesia, she observed.
The issue was a topic of discussion at the seminar which featured three panelists - Eva, Hkyet Thing Nan of the Unity and Democracy Party representing Kachin State in the Myanmar parliament, and Ignas Kleden of KID.
Indonesia has often been praised for its democracy, said Eva, who is also the deputy chief of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) faction at the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR).
Like Myanmar, Indonesia is also beset with a wide range of problems, including wide economic disparities, land disputes, violence against minority groups, impunity, and corruption, she added.
