Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Prophet Muhammad was a transformative leader who led his people from the time of darkness into a new era that was full of faith, stated President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here, on Tuesday.

Speaking at an event to observe the birthday of Prophet Muhammad at the National Monument (Monas) square, the president noted, "We have to be grateful to the Prophet, who has taught Islam, led us and made a significant change that we call a transformation from darkness into a new era of light."

On the occasion, the head of state noted that the Prophet was a hard-learner, a hard-worker, and protector of his people, and therefore the leaders in Indonesia should follow his example.

He pointed out that that the Prophet's spirit of leadership and hard work should be an example for Indonesia to continue to develop the nation because there are no short-cuts to a goal.

Earlier on his Twitter account @SBYudhoyono, the president tweeted, "Let us emulate the sublime nature and follow the example of Prophet Muhammad who has set a good example to all."

The president noted that the prophet was a model for Muslims to learn and emulate his thoughts, his words, his personality and his attitude in loving his people and respecting others.

The birthday of Prophet Muhammad, commonly called Maulid Nabi in Indonesia, is commemorated by Muslims during the month of Rabi-al-awwal, the third month of the Muslim calendar.

Muhammad was born approximately in the year 570 of the Gregorian calendar.

He was raised by his uncle after both his parents died when he was very young. Prophet Muhammad learned to be a shepherd and developed the skills to trade like a merchant.

He began preaching around the age of 40. Eventually, he and his followers, totaling to around ten thousand, took control of Mecca.

Muhammad died of an illness in 632 after integrating Arabia into a single Muslim entity.

Further, President Yudhoyono also called on all public and state elements to maintain security, order, and tolerance in the run up to 2014 general elections. (*)
