The quakes epicenter was located 131 km southeast of East Bolang Mongondow, or 143 km of Kotamobagu, and 10 km below sea level in East Maluku waters, spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said here on Wednesday.
He confirmed that the tremor did not have potential to cause a tsunami. "The earthquake was felt mildly by people in Gorontalo and in Manado City," he added.
However, a number of people in Manado City rushed out of their homes when they felt the quake.
"There is not yet a report of damage, the local disaster mitigation office (BPBD) is still collecting data about the impacts of the quake," he stated.
He also informed that an aftershock hit North Sulawesi at 12.16 WIB. The magnitude of the aftershock was 5.7 on the Richter Scale and was centered in 139 km southeast of East Bolaang Mongondow.(*)
