"Indirect elections will result in women not being able to elect their prospective candidates for regional heads who fights for the communities," said KPIs Secretary-General Dian Kartika Sari in Jakarta on Monday.
According to Dian, direct elections resulted in the publics political participation without intermediaries.
Further, she said, direct elections was a form of democracy in which the public can choose their own leaders.
This event was attended by some 20 people from various civil society groups who joined together to reject indirect elections.
Many non-governmental organization concerned with womens issues also supported the petition, such as Perludem and Indonesia Beragam, which is made up of 141 groups.
This petition was submitted for the debate on the bill for the mechanism of regional elections.
