Pekanbaru (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) will soon serve as a data bank keeping all national statistical data that could serve as a reference for development by the government or the people.

"The draft is already prepared. It needs only a decision of the president. Hopefully it would be signed before the present government ends its office term," Agus Subeno, inspector of Area II of BPS , said at a workshop on statistical data here on Wednesday.

Agus said currently BPS is strengthening its infrastructure to support its function to store national strategic data such as inflation, poverty rate and economic growth data.

"We are building infrastructure of recovery data center in the city of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. Therefore, in the event of something extraordinary taking place such as earthquake in Jakarta, we will have reserve to recover data," he said.

He said the role of BPS in providing strategic statistical data is vital to support development and to facilitate investors.

However, he said, BPS is often in difficulty in collecting data when it needs to take samples from companies.

"It is not always easy for BPS officers to collect data from companies, but we continue socialization to convince people about the importance of the data," he said.

He said BPS will maintain its dependence and will remain reliable in providing statistical data although it has the status as a government agency part.

BPS will be able to present data on inflation fast and correct, he said.

"BPS ranks among 10 largest reliable statistic agencies in the world," Agus said.

He said BPS continues to make socialization to the people hoping that the people would be aware of statistical data.

"It would be useless if the people could not use out statistical data," he said.
