"The essence of Muharram 1 celebrations is a change but a change would not happen without hard work," Jusuf Kalla who is better known as JK, said during the celebration of the Islamic New year at the Bung Karno Sports Stadium (GBK) here on Sunday.
The Vice President called on the people to work well and harder, and take part in the fight against illegal drugs, or narcotics trafficking.
"Let us unite and reinforce determination to crack down on the trafficking of illegal narcotics. We should not carry out rehabilitation on narcotics addicts only but also join hand in hand with families and the people in the fight against the circulation of illegal drugs," he said.
The Vice President said illegal use of drugs was the same as corruption, both are the peoples enemies, he added.
"Narcotics and corruption are our enemies," JK noted.
The Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) organized the Muharram 1, 1436 Hegira Islamic New Year celebration at the BGK stadium on Sunday. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims attended the event.
MUI Chairman Din Syamsuddin said the event in the BGK stadium was the first of its kind held to celebrate the Islamic New Year.
"It should not happen that the AD New Year celebrations are more alive than those of the Islamic New Year in the country," Din added.
