Bojonegoro, E. Java (ANTARA News) - A number of embankments along the Bengawan Solo River at the downstream of Bojonegoro, Tuban, and Gresik in East Java are in critical condition, a local government official said here Monday.

"We have reported this to the Begawan Solo River Authority in Solo, Central Java," Head of Bojonegoro Districts Water Resources Management, Bengawan Solo Section, Mucharom said.

With the poor condition of the Bengawan Solos levees, floods caused by its overflowing can threaten rice fields and houses along its banks anytime, he remarked.

For instance, the Bengawan Solos right embankment in Sarangan village, Kanor sub district, Bojonegoro District, had slid some 50 meters to a depth of six meters while the one in Kalaban village had slid some 50 meters to a depth of 0.3-0.5 meters.

The levee in Jombang Village, Delik sub district, Gresik District, had slid some 100 meters to a depth of five meters. Another embankment in Lundo Village, Bejeng sub district, had slid 210 meters to a depth of four meters, he added.

The same condition has been reported from other villages such as Bengkelo Lor and Cermenlerek in Bejeng sub district, Gresik District, and Sembungrejo and Banjararum in Tuban District, he explained.
