Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An NGO called the Volunteers for Democracy Struggle (Repdem) has urged the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to review its standard operating procedure (SOP) in dealing with an alleged bribery case involving Commissioner General Budi Gunawan.

The KPKs move to name Budi Gunawan as a suspect was an intervention on President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)s directive to appoint Gunawan as national police chief, Chairman of the Jakarta chapter of Repdem Faisal Rahman noted in a press statement here, Monday.

He urged the KPK to stop interfering in Jokowis policy. The decision to name Budi Gunawan as police chief is the presidents prerogative, and any intervention by the KPK can be categorized as a politicization of the law, he added.

Faisal Rahman indicated a political motive behind KPKs decision to name Gunawan as a suspect, and therefore, he urged the anti-graft agency to review its SOP in dealing with the case.

He found it strange that the KPK had never called Gunawan for investigation, but the agency named him a suspect after Jokowi appointed Gunawan as the sole candidate for the police chiefs position.

The KPK is prone to politicizing laws against candidates for high-ranking official posts who are disliked by the agency, according to him.

Such a move by the KPK can create chaos and destabilize the countrys economy and politics, he added.

At a press conference on Friday night, President Joko Widodo announced his decision to postpone the induction of Gunawan as the police chief.

"I have decided to postpone it. But, it is not cancelled. You have to remember that," he emphasized.

During the press conference, the president also revealed his decision to give an honorable discharge to Sutarman from his post as the police chief. Jokowi said he had assigned Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as the acting police chief to temporarily fill the position.
