Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated General Gatot Nurmantyo as the new chief of the National Defense Forces (TNI) and Lieutenant General (retired) Sutiyoso as the new chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) on Wednesday.

Nurmantyo replace General Moeldoko and Sutiyoso will replace Lieutenant General (retired) Marciano Norman.

In its 36th plenary session here on Friday (July 3), the House of Representatives (DPR) approved the candidacy of General Nurmantyo for the post of TNI commander and Lieutenant General (retired) Sutiyoso as the BIN chief.

Chairman of Commission I of the DPR Mahfudz Siddiq reported during the meeting that on Wednesday, Commission I had agreed to accept Nurmantyos candidacy for the post of TNI chief after he underwent the fit and proper test conducted by the commission.

General Nurmantyo, who was born in Tegal, Central Java, on March 13, 1960, was earlier the Army chief of staff. He took over the post of Army chief of staff on July 26, 2014, replacing General Budiman.

Nurmantyo served as governor of the Military Academy during the 2009-2010 period, as the commander of the Brawijaya Military Regional Command in the 2010-2011 period, as the commander of the Army Education Command between 2011 and 2013, and the commander of the Army Strategic Command.
