A written statement received by ANTARA News here on Wednesday mentioned that the honorary title was given for his contribution to international literature over the last eight years.
Professor Jan Palmowski of the University of Warwick said that Andrea Hirata has attracted the worlds attention to Indonesian literature and that his works have had an impact in many countries, not in Indonesia alone.
Hirata has been involved in the publication of books on a global scale. He actively participates in various book festivals and in teaching literature in universities and colleges abroad.
His first novel "Laskar Pelangi" has been translated into 34 foreign languages and has been published in more than 130 countries by leading publishers.
Hiratas second novel titled "Der Traumer" has also been translated into several foreign languages. He is currently preparing to publish his third novel "Father" abroad.
This honorary title is Hiratas third award in international literature.
He was the first winner of BuchAwards 2013 in Germany for his novel "Die Regenbogen Truppe" published by Hanser Berlin.
In addition, Hirata was the first winner of the New York Book Festival 2013 in the general fiction category for his novel "The Rainbow Troops," as well.
Besides Hirata, a number of celebrities, such as well-known British director Mike Leigh, were also recipients of the honorary doctorate of the university.
The University of Warwick is one of ten leading universities in the United Kingdom.
