Banda Aceh, Aceh Province (ANTARA News) - The Aceh Provincial Police have arrested three residents suspected of hunting a sumateran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and another suspected of selling the protected animal species.

The four suspects were arrested in Aceh Tamiang, Chief of the Certain Crime Sub-directorate of the Special Crime Investigation Directorate of the Aceh Provincial Police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Mirwazi speaking on behalf of Aceh Provincial Police Inspector General M Husein Hamidi said here on Monday.

"The four suspects were arrested at a house in Jambe Rambung village, Bandar Pusaka sub-district, Aceh Tamiang, at 02.30 pm on Saturday," he said.

The suspects are identified as M Isa alias Ajo (45), Sahruna bin Abdul Wahab (29), and Amir (45), all of them residents of Bukit Cinta hamlet, Peunaron sub-district, East Aceh, and Baharuddin (42), a resident of Jambe Rambung village Bandar Pusaka sub-district, Aceh Tamiang, he said.

Mirwazi said the police also seized leather and bone of Sumatran tiger.

"The tiger killed by the suspects was 1.5 meters long. The tiger is believed to be five years old or still to be young," he said.

The suspects admitted that they hunted the tiger at forest near Listen village, Pindeng sub-district, Gayo Luwes district on August 6. They trapped the tiger using ropes.

"They later killed the tiger and removed the leather from its body," he said.

"The three residents suspected of hunting a tiger admitted they did similar thing three years ago. They sold a preserved tiger for Rp15 million," he said.
