Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has urged the government to move quickly to deliver emergency assistance to victims of severe floods in Bali that have left at least 14 people dead and two others missing.
“The government must act immediately to secure the basic needs of residents from the very first day,” Maharani said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll had reached 14 by Thursday morning, while two people remained unaccounted for in Denpasar.
“These floods have claimed lives, destroyed homes, disrupted trade, and even halted tourism, which is Bali’s economic backbone,” Maharani said.
According to the Bali Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), floods have inundated seven districts and cities: Denpasar, Gianyar, Badung, Tabanan, Karangasem, Jembrana, and Klungkung.

Authorities said 562 residents have been displaced, including 327 in Jembrana and 235 in Denpasar.
Maharani stressed the urgent need to distribute food, clean water, medicine, clothing, and supplies for babies, children, and older adults.
She also called for proper and safe evacuation shelters equipped with sanitation, emergency health services, and access to education for children whose schools were affected.
The speaker emphasized that transparent data collection on victims, losses, and evacuees is crucial to ensure aid is delivered accurately.
For long-term disaster prevention, Maharani urged the government to audit spatial planning, strengthen river basin management, reforest upstream areas, and improve urban drainage systems.
She further underlined the importance of clear public communication to prevent misinformation among affected communities.
