"Based on our analysis, there is a certain party, which is unhappy with inter-religious harmony in the country," MUI Chairman for Religious Harmony, Yusnar Yusuf, remarked on Wednesday.
Indonesia is the worlds most populous Muslim-majority country, although it also has significant Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and Confucian minorities.
Aceh is the only province to have officially introduced the Sharia law, which is increasingly being applied to non-Muslims as well.
But the MUI Chairman noted that the large number of followers of Islam in Indonesia was not a reason other religions should follow the rules of the majority group.
"It should not be like that. We have to be aware that religious harmony in Indonesia is very strong," Yusnar said, adding that even though Indonesia is the worlds most populous Muslim-majority country, it is not as volatile as other Islamic countries in the Middle East.
Therefore, he said Indonesia is the safest country in the world.
"But there are some people who do not like the religious harmony in the country, and take strategic momentum to lunch with their actions," he noted.(*)
