"On Monday (Dec. 28), before the president returned to Jakarta, he ordered me to settle human trafficking cases that have affected the people of NTT," Brigadier General Endang Sunjaya, the NTT police command chief, stated here on Thursday.
He said the president was serious while giving the directive as he had witnessed an increase in the number of human trafficking cases in the region.
In 2015, a total of 27 cases were handled in addition to others that are still being processed.
In view of this and following the presidents order, Sunjaya vowed to take maximum efforts to settle them.
"We will take all possible efforts in coordination with other related agencies, so that the problem does not escalate in the region," he emphasized.
This problem no longer concerns the local police but also community elements in NTT, he pointed out.
He said sound coordination between the TNI (military), local governments, non-governmental organizations, and the people would be the best way to overcome the problem.
He remarked that the presidents order would be a special challenge for him as the problem arose almost every year.
"The president also urged us to be sensitive in dealing with human trafficking cases since according to information received by him, the number of cases in NTT is large," he added.(*)
