"The joint meeting will be led by the House of Representatives (DPR) leadership and attended by chiefs of bodies and factions in the MPR," Deputy Chairman of MPR Hidayat Nur Wahid said while receiving a delegation of the Confederation of the Indonesian Labor Union (KSPI) here on Tuesday.
At the meeting, the DPR leadership will ask factions in the MPR to disclose their views on the proposed amendment to the 1945 Constitution and discuss the results of a study conducted by bodies at the MPR.
If the factions at the MPR agree to the proposed amendment, it could then be discussed at the next meeting, he said.
"If more than 50 percent of MPR members agree to the limited amendment (to the 1945 Constitution), it could be further processed," he added.
The proposal for a limited amendment to the 1945 Constitution surfaced during a national working meeting of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) here on January 11 and 12.
The PDIP insists that it will only endorse a limited amendment to the constitution that will further empower MPR, which had been a powerful legislative institution during the New Order regime.(*)
