"That means there were 1,000 children among the victims of 1,726 cases of sexual abuses including rape, sodomy and incest last year, a senior journalist, winner of Yap Thiam Hien Human Right Award Maria Hartiningsih said here on Friday.
Around 52 percent of 3,338 criminal cases in 2014 and 42 percent of 2,700 cases on children in 2013 were sexual abuses, Maria said in a journalistic training organized by the Institute of Resource Governance and Social Change (IRGSC) in cooperation with Pena for Eastern Indonesia Timur (PIT) and the US embassy.
The sexual abuses were almost always committed with violence physically, she said.
She said around 50 percent of poor families were headed by mothers who were victims of polygamy , negligence or divorce.
She said women have not been fully given their rights as obvious in the little representation by women in official institutes.
Women make up only 17.32 percent of the members of the countrys legislative body for the 2014-2019 term, slightly down from 18 percent in the previous period.
The proportion is higher in the cabinet reaching almost 30 percent, Maria said.
The number of women holding the executive position is low in proportion although equal in skill and capability, she said.
In the mass media , the number of women holding the executive position especially with the decision making power is not more than 10 percent of the total number of female journalists in the country, she said.(*)
