Our position is in the middle between big and small nations."Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Roberto Azevedo has lauded Indonesias economic reforms currently being carried out by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
Indonesian Trade Minister Thomas Lembong made the statement after accompanying the president while receiving the WTO director general at the presidential palace here on Wednesday along with Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution.
Lembong remarked that the economic reforms currently being implemented by the Indonesian government could serve as an example for other countries.
"Azevedo hailed the presidents agenda of economic reforms. We can say that the world is now looking at Indonesia with its economic reforms that may be used as an example," he emphasized.
During the meeting, President Widodo elaborated on the countrys deregulation program and 11 economic policy packages he had produced so far, according to the trade minister.
Lembong remarked that as a WTO member, Indonesias position was quite special as it was a big country but at the same time also a developing nation.
"Our position is in the middle between big and small nations. We are a big country but also a developing one. We can hold discussions with all countries. This is what has made us special and strategic," he affirmed.
Azevedo also praised Indonesias constructive and positive role in the WTO conference in Bali held three years ago and in Nairobi in 2015.
