About 100,000 cubic metres of mud and rocks flowed downhill in Taining county early on Sunday, burying a hydroelectric power station that was under construction there, Xinhua reported.
Seven people were injured, it said, and President Xi Jinping had demanded county officials to step up rescue efforts.
In December, a landslide in the southern city of Shenzhen buried 77 people. The government has blamed breaches of construction safety rules for the disaster and a number of officials have been arrested.
