Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - As many as 114 robot teams from 51 institutes of higher learning across Indonesia are taking part in the 2016 Indonesian Robot Contest from June 1 to 4 held in Surabaya, capital of East Java province.

The teams are participating in this contest after being selected from four regions, including Sumatra, Jakarta, Central Java, and East Java, chief of the event's organizing committee Dr Ir Zainal Arief MT said here on Thursday.

The Sumatra region covers all Sumatran provinces, Riau Islands province and Bangka Belitung province. Jakarta region covers Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Papua, and Sulawesi. Central Java region covers Central Java and Yogyakarta, and Kalimantan, and East Java region covers East Java, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara.

"Last year, we had five regions, as Papua region represented Papua, itself. But this year, participants from Papua are distributed to all regions, thus making the competition tougher," he said.

Moreover, the 2016 robot contest also features a new contest division, the soccer robot exhibition. The new division is also contested at a national level during the robot contest.

With the new division, the 2016 robot contest now has six contest divisions, including KRI or ABU Indonesia robot (KRAI), fire fighter robot (KRPAI), Indonesian Dance Art (KRSTI), Indonesian soccer robot contest and the robot soccer exhibition (ERSB).

"ERSBI is also different from KRSBI because KRSBI is a humanoid robot. However, ERSBI uses a computer as controller," he said.
