Asian Games is a big event, with 54 participating countries."
Palembang (ANTARA News) - The Asian Games to be held in August 2018 would certainly boost the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs), Vice Governor of South Sumatra Ishak Mekki stated.

"Asian Games is a big event, with 54 participating countries. Of course, by organizing the event, several sectors in South Sumatra will receive a boost, such as the SMEs sector," he noted here on Monday.

Mekki said the SMEs sector in South Sumatra continued to grow as Palembang city had hosted the 25th SEA Games in 2011.

This trend was apparent from the growth in the turnover of SMEs in South Sumatra, which increased from Rp24.96 trillion in 2014 to Rp25.27 trillion in 2015.

The number of new SMEs increased to 319, or some 73.37 percent in 2015, from 181 SMEs in 2014.

Moreover, the total number of SMEs also increased from 2,022,868 units in 2014 to 2,071,416 in 2015.

"Hopefully, the number of SMEs could be increased by up to threefolds ahead of the Asian Games. Apart from an increase in the number of SMEs, we expect their quality to also improve," Mekki emphasized.

The culinary and handicraft products of SMEs were expected to be of high quality and of international standard in order to compete in the global market, he said.
