(Instead, they should) prioritize peace and stability in the region," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has called on all concerned parties to prioritize peace as they work to resolve the disputes in South China Sea following the recent ruling of the international arbitration tribunal.
"In short, we call on all parties to exercise restraint and not do anything that could increase tension in the region. (Instead, they should) prioritize peace and stability in the region," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said when queried by newsmen at the presidential palace compound here on Wednesday.
She stated that Indonesia emphasized the importance of respecting international laws, including the 1982 UN Convention of the Law of the Sea.
She argued that stability and peace in South China Sea would help economic growth in Asia.
"I am convinced that open conflict is not a good option for us all and I think everyone must continue to avoid any power projection measures," she advised.
Regarding Chinas rejection of the ruling of the international arbitration tribunal that favored the Philippines on Tuesday, Minister Retno underlined that Indonesia would keep monitoring the developments.
She, however, made it clear that Indonesia would maintain its position as supporting a peaceful settlement and will reject any unnecessary actions that could escalate the situation.
China has underscored that the ruling of the international tribunal would not affect the process of consultations regarding the settlement of the Code of Conduct to overcome disputes in the South China Sea.(*)
