The longer the occupation of Palestine by Israel continued, the greater the violence the world was likely to see, Ambassador Djani noted in an open debate on Palestine and the Quartets report in the United Nations Security Council in New York on Tuesday.
"For over sixty years, the Palestinian people have been left without a homeland," he remarked.
"They have been robbed of their dignity and forced to live in subjugation," he further pointed out.
The ambassador reminded that resolving prolonged conflicts and ending the occupation by Israel remained the greatest challenges confronting the United Nations, particularly the Council, which had the primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.
The 15-member body had, so far, adopted 89 resolutions on the Palestine-Israeli conflict, yet none of them had been respected by Israel, he stressed.
Djani also said that Israel must stop building Jewish settlements on Palestinian land as it is against the existing international laws and hinders the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The ambassador also regretted the fact that the report of the Quartet, comprising the United States, Russia, the United Nations, and the European Union, had failed to capture the reason behind the conflict, which is the Israeli occupation.
Peace must be realized in Palestine by ending the occupation by Israel.
The Indonesian government has been consistent in supporting a two-state solution, he emphasized.
"Palestine has been occupied by Israel for too long, and this is clearly against the international laws. The Quartet, the United Nations Security Council, and concerned parties must work harder to end the occupation," Djani stated.(*)
