Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA News) - The West Sumatra Provincial office of Bank Indonesia (BI), or central bank, will launch an anti-shabby money movement to publicize it in a bid to treat the rupiah well.

"The value of shabby money in West Sumatra is still high. In 2015, BI destroyed Rp5.7 trillion of shabby money," according to head of the West Sumatras BI provincial office Puji Atmoko here Monday.

The launch will be conducted on July 31, 2016, as part of a campaign of non-cash movements in cooperation with other banks in West Sumatra, he stated.

So many findings of shabby money indicated that people in West Sumatra (Minangkabau people) are still fond of cash transactions.

"As the money is often used, it becomes shabby quickly," he remarked, and added that much of the money was found with staple marks and strikethroughs.

The shabby money was mostly found in the Kerinci Distict (Jambi Province) namely in banknotes of Rp2.000 and Rp5.000, Atmoko further said.

In addition, in West Sumatra, shabby money was mostly found in Pesisir Selatan District.

The solution to reducing shabby money was by intensifying non-cash transactions and reducing the use of cash, he also said.(*)
