"We take a firm stance against those spreading hate and making provocative statements through social media," deputy director of special crime investigation of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hengki Haryadi, said here on Tuesday.
He informed that the police arrested Ahmad Taufik in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.
Hengki said initially the police discovered a hate speech that was uploaded. Its contents said: "Tanjung Balai Medan chaotic 30 July 2016...!! Temples burned. Our Muslim brothers let us close ranks. Let us make 98 tragedy to happen again. #Allahu_Akbar..." (sic) on Facebook on Sunday (July 31).
Following this, a team of cybercrime analysts investigated and tracked down the owner of the account who turned out to be Ahmad Taufik.
Taufiks uploaded content emerged a day after the rioting in Tanjungbalai, North Sumatra, early on Saturday morning (July 30).
The police then reached Taufiks home and named him a suspect in connection with the hate speech case.
The police did not detain the suspect because he had suffered a stroke.
Hengki warned people using the social media not to spread hate speech that has the potential to incite and negatively impacts the social life of the people.
"Some riots broke out in the past following provocations spread through the social media," he said.(*)
