Prof Dr HM Norsanie Darlan MS PH of the University of Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, said the government should consider reviewing regulation giving remission for corruption convicts.
Earlier the Corruption Eradication Commission has expressed disappointment with the inclusion of corruption convicts receiving remission traditionally granted in commemoration of the National Independence Day August 17.
On Saturday, Prof Norsanie said granting remission for corruption convicts as well as drug convicts is not educative.
"The punishment becomes less deterrent. It is not educative especially not from the educational point of view," the professor said.
He said the government does not have to give humanity argument in giving remission for those stealing the state money and drug dealers.
"Those committing corruption and trafficking illicit drugs are much less humane. They are a threat to the survival of the nations future generation," he said.
The government granted remission for 82,000 of 131,000 prisoners all over the country on the occasion of the countrys 71st Independence Day commemoration.
Law and Human Right Minister Yasonna Laoly said with the remission 3,528 convicts became a freemen.
KPK said the government is too generous in granting the remission that the punishment is less deterrent.
"We regret the decision. we and other law enforcement agencies have worked hard in investigating cases and brought suspects to justice," KPK spokeswoman Yuyuk Andriati said.
Among the leading corruption convicts receiving remission were former lawmaker Muhammad Nazaruddin and his wife Neneng Sri Wahyuni.
Nazaruddin and his wife hold a letter certifying them as justice collaborators.
Justice collaborators are entitled to cut in sentence.
Other high profile corruption convicts Sutan Bhatoegana, Anas Urbaningrum, Andi Alifian Mallarangeng, Suryadharma Ali, Dada Rosada, Angelina Sondakh, Dewie Yasin Limpo were not given remission.(*)
