These crimes included robbery, abduction, hostage situations and illegal fishing.
The President made the statement during a plenary meeting of the leaders of ASEAN member countries at the National Convention Center in Vientiane, Laos, on Tuesday.
Detailed discussion regarding efforts to enhance the security of ASEAN water territories was previously held as part of the 14th meeting of ASEAN Political-Security Community at the same venue.
In a statement before the plenary meeting, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi addressed the issue of progress of execution of tasks by each member country in the spirit of synergy, the meetings main agenda, to realize the goal of ASEAN Community 2025, included in the ASEAN Political-Security pillar.
"One of the goals is the issue of security in the Sulu sea and its surrounding waters territory, especially for the three surrounding countries -- Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines -- to further strengthen cooperation and ensure security in the area," she stated.
"This issue has also been discussed in the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in July," the Foreign Minister continued.
Other than the political-security pillar, Indonesia focused the discussion in the plenary meeting on three specific issues -- the importance of ASEAN centralization, reaching ASEAN Community Building, and ASEANs 50 years anniversary in 2017 to strengthen aerial synergy.
Along with the Foreign Minister, the plenary meeting in Vientiane was also attended by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, as well as Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung.(*)
