"While signing the regulation, he also sent a strong signal that the task force would operate within the institutions and will not be an outside agency," Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has issued a Presidential Regulation, number 87/2016, for setting up a task force to eradicate illegal levies and regulate efforts in this regard.
"While signing the regulation, he also sent a strong signal that the task force would operate within the institutions and will not be an outside agency," Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said at a press conference at the presidential office here on Friday.
The government suspects involvement of certain elements within various ministries and state institutions in the crime.
"The institutions involved in the task force include the police, the home affairs ministry and the attorney generals office. They must muster up the courage to carry out in-house cleansing because people suspect that similar practices were prevalent there too," he observed.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Wiranto pointed out that the presidential regulation has been issued to restore public confidence and to ensure that the community has a sense of legal certainty and justice.
Three areas need to be worked upon now, namely putting in place regulations, getting the law enforcement personnel and institutions in order and developing a culture of respect for law.
"We will also ensure that the law enforcement agencies work in a professional manner. The personnel working in these law enforcement agencies must certainly have a totally professional approach," he added.
Wiranto underlined that the task force, locally known as "Satgas Saber," will mainly target illegal levies that directly affect the community and cause a sense of fear and uneasiness among the public with regard to investments.
The regulation has been made into law by Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly.(*)
