"What we have to do is asking these countries to declare their supports in a written statement," Hasan Kleib noted.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hasan Kleib, said the government continues to collect support for the candidacy of Indonesia as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2019-2020.

"We continue to gather support for Indonesias nomination to a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council," Hasan Kleib said here on Monday.

According to him, so far there are three types of support gained by Indonesia for its candidacy for the UN Security Council non-permanent member, one of which is a unilateral support from several countries.

"First, there is a unilateral support, in which a state directly supports Indonesia without any requirement of reciprocity," he said.

The Second is a reciprocal support, in which Indonesia will support a country to obtain a certain position in an international board or agency, and the country will support Indonesia to be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The other support is a verbal one that has been submitted by the governments of several countries, both in bilateral meetings and in regional and multilateral forums.

"What we have to do is asking these countries to declare their supports in a written statement," Hasan noted.

Earlier, at the UN Headquarters, New York, the United States on 23 September 2016, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L.P Marsudi officially announced the candidacy of Indonesia as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2019-2020.

"Indonesia is a country with essential prerequisites to be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2019-2020, and Indonesia is ready for it," Minister Retno said.

Retno explained Indonesias posture makes it feasible to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Indonesia, she added, is the worlds fourth most populous country, the worlds third largest democracy and the worlds largest Muslim country.

According to Retno, Indonesia proves that Islam, democracy and modernity can be established in harmony.

"With more than 17 thousand islands inhabited by more than 1,300 ethnic groups, Indonesia is a true model for tolerance and pluralism, a value which is always projected by Indonesia in dealing with other countries," she said.

Foreign Minister also stressed that Indonesia plays an active role in promoting democracy, among others by organizing Bali Democracy Forum (BDF).

In addition, she said, Indonesia is among the ten largest contributing-UN peacekeeping forces countries. One hundred and thirty two Indonesian representatives abroad help the country understands well the international and regional situation on the ground.

"With such a background, Indonesia would like to nominate itself as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2019-2020. Indonesia requires support of all countries in order to become a true partner for peace," Foreign Minister Retno said.

As a member of the UN Security Council, Indonesia will play a responsible and constructive role, and try its utmost to contribute to the UN Security Council, she added.(*)
