Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked the alumni of the 10 November Institute of Technology (ITS) to participate in the maritime development, as part of its goal to promote Indonesia as a global maritime axis.

During the meeting with the president at the Merdeka Palace here on Tuesday, Chairman of the Association of the ITS alumni Dwi Soetjipto reported the results of a Focus Group Discussion held by the institute recently.

The discussion was themed "Indonesia as an Independent, Advanced and Strong World Maritime Axis."

Jokowi hoped that the results of the discussion would be followed up soon, particularly concerning infrastructure, human resources and innovation to promote Indonesia as the global maritime axis.

The ITS has also planned to organize a workshop on energy self-sufficiency and the global maritime axis in November.

"This activity is part of the institutes anniversary to be celebrated in November," he stated.

The ITS alumni has also proposed five-point suggestions to the president.

The first point is the need for a maritime industry development strategy supported by weather information; second is the need for boosting sea transportation to support logistic distribution; third is the need for capacity building of the tourism industry, particularly maritime tourism; fourth is the need for oil and gas exploration in seas to be supported by the government; and fifth is the need for boosting maritime-based industry.
