Surabaya, which belongs to ring 1 in East Java province, should set a higher municipal minimum wage than in other cities, coordinator of the Surabaya Labor Movement Moch Sochib said.
However, the municipal minimum wage proposed by the city administration is the lowest among major cities and has angered workers, he said.
The Surabaya government has proposed the 2017 municipal minimum wage be set at Rp3.2 million, while the Sidoarjo and Pasuruan district heads have proposed Rp3.5 million and Gresik district head has proposed a Rp3.7 million minimum wage.
"Today, the East Java provincial wage council has held a final meeting to finalize (the draft regulation to that effect). The recommendation on East Java workers minimum wages have been handed over to the Java governor," he said.
Sochib said hundreds of workers came to the private residence of the mayor after they failed to meet at Ahok earlier in the day.(*)
