She made the call in connection with the implementation of elections in 101 regions in the country on February 15, next year.
"PDIP cadres must remain calm, exercise restraint and help create a peaceful and secure atmosphere," she said to newsmen at the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle headquarters.
The PDIP would continue to act as a national binding force, maintain good relations with figures from the community and ensure the preservation and implementation of Pancasila state ideology, the 1945 Constitution, the Unitary State of Indonesia and the Unity in Diversity as the countrys statehood pillars, she said.
The PDIP fully supports the government of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla in carrying out the constitutional mandate of protecting the citizens of the country, she said.
"The government must remain firm on the principles of belief in God, humanity, Indonesian unity, democracy and social justice," she said.
Megawati called on all party cadres and people in the country to support President Widodo and Vice President Kalla to be able to work maximally to realize the ideals of the countrys independence and build a Great Indonesia.
The former president made the statement after leading a coordination meeting of regional party leaders from across the country ahead of the implementation of regional elections in February next year.
Regarding the decision of the police to name Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) as a suspect in an alleged blasphemy case, Megawati reiterated that Indonesia is a law-based country.
The essence of the law is justice, presumption of innocence and equality, she said.
In view of that, the PDIP, which is one of the four political parties supporting Ahok in the Jakarta gubernatorial election, would respect the whole process of law over the issue, she said.
The PDIP would continue to support Ahok for the election, she added. (*)
