Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Police Chief General Tito Karnavian has called on mass prayers participants to support the legal process against non-active Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, or widely known as Ahok, for alleged religious blasphemy.

"I need your support," Tito said before thousands of mass prayer participants at the Monas Square here on Friday.

The police chief has asked the public to pray for a smooth legal process against Ahok.

"Let us pray together, hopefully that the legal process could be continued. We will guard (the process)," he added.

In response to his statement, the crowd chanted: "prove it, prove it."

The event dubbed "Action to Defend Islam" was the third to be held in the capital city, demanding justice and calling for the arrest of Ahok in the Quranic blasphemy case.

The December 2 peace rally activity began at 8 am in the National Monument complex with mass Friday prayers as the main agenda.

Some participants arrived at the square since last night, while many others flocked Istiqlal Mosque to stay overnight on Thursday.(*)
