Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has highlighted the environmental challenges that need to receive more attention, during the opening of the IORA Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) summit in Jakarta Convention Center on Tuesday.

"We need to pay urgent attention to the environment," Jokowi noted.

He stated that since he was elected as the president in 2014, he had imposed tough action on law breakers regarding environmental issues such as poaching.

"We have also enforced concrete steps to handle the wildfires which pollute the environment," he stated.

According to him, we need to pay special attention to environmental issues. This is because of common practices by some local communities who burn trash in open air, which pollutes the atmosphere and affects the health of the people.

"Every year, enormous amounts of plastics waste enter the ocean, and I feel the amount is increasing," he added.

Jokowi expressed his appreciation to IORA, which initiates practical solutions regarding these issues.

"I encourage the ministers, high-level governments, and the members of this summit to push forward the practical solutions regarding these issues," Jokowi remarked.

On behalf of the IORA Community, Jokowi expressed gratitude towards the members for their attendance to the summit.

Jokowi asked the members of IORA summit to hold the conference in a constructive and productive manner to create the Jakarta Concord and Action Plan.(*)
