A large number of Muslims conducted congregational prayers for the deceased cleric at a mosque of the boarding school.
"The late Muzadi was a great ulema and a very close friend of Kalla. The demise of Muzadi is a great loss to Kalla and the people of the nation, who loved and respected him," according to Husain Abdullah, a spokesman of the vice president, here on Thursday.
In Jan 2017, Kalla had visited Muzadi in a hospital.
Kalla expressed his deep condolences for Muzadis death and stated that he was a moderate ulema and a role model for other Muslims.
Muzadi was the former chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the countrys largest Islamic organization.
In the meantime, the United Development Party (PPP) Secretary General Arsul Sani said Muzadi was at the forefront for his efforts to distance Muslims from radical ideologies, imported from elsewhere, that tend to destroy the Unitary State of Indonesia.(*)
