Sidooarjo (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto has asked all provincial and district governments in the country to provide information technology-based public services.

"Right now many district and provincial governments have provided information technology-based public services," he said after attending the 21st peak commemoration of Regional Autonomy Day 2017 held in Sidoarjo Square on Tuesday.

Public service is one of the yardsticks to assess the performance of the central and regional governments, he said.

"If it (information technology-based public service) is always developed, some time in the future saber pungli (illegal levies eradication task force) cannot be continued because there will be sophisticated information technology capable of reducing direct contacts with the public," he said.

Information technology will enable government apparatuses to provide public services more quickly and control public services more easily, he said.

"I hope that the commemoration of the Regional Autonomy Day will encourage regions to make introspection about to which extent they have done to advance the existing autonomy," he said.

Director General of Regional Autonomy of the Home Affairs Ministry Sumarsono said every year the ministry, along with relevant agencies evaluate the performance of each regional government.

"As many as 540 districts in 34 provinces have their performance evaluated (every year). East Java province and Sidoarjo district are among the best regions in terms of public service innovations," he said.
