Jakarta (ANTARA News) - United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Jakarta and Indonesias News Agency ANTARA held a discussion around the cooperation to disseminate information on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The statement was made by Director ad interim of UNIC Jakarta Eshila Maravanyika and CEO of ANTARA Meidyatama Soeryodiningrat in Jakarta on Thursday.

"UNIC is under the administration of the UNs Secretariat, its duty is to disseminate information about the UNs activities across the world. However, we (UNIC Jakarta) bear a special mission in Indonesia, which is not only to disseminate information about the SDGs but also to establish cooperation, with the media for example, to achieve the development program," she said in Wisma ANTARA in Jakarta on Thursday.

Maravanyika further stated that news agencies, including ANTARA, hold a vital role in helping the United Nations to achieve its SDGs in all of its member states, especially in Indonesia.

"The UNICs main partner is the media. We always strive to maintain our cooperation not only for reporting news but also to make a tangible impact to the community," she remarked, adding that her offices mission was to spread global issues for the general public to understand.

"That way, the media holds an important role in educating the public about the various missions and duties carried out by the United Nations, all in the effort to achieve welfare and peace for the global population," the UN official, who was previously based in New York, remarked.

Meanwhile, during the meeting, CEO of the Indonesian News Agency ANTARA, Meidyatama Soeryodiningrat, lauded the UNICs visit to the building, as he called on journalists to be involved in the UNs SDG programs.

"Rather than conducting a seminar or a workshop, UNIC can create a special program by selecting one or two fields of the SDGs, for example, and inviting journalists to observe and report on how the development missions are being implemented," he explained in a discussion session with Maravanyika.

He then revealed that the UNs SDGs have become a part of President Joko Widodos strategic policies.

"Our government is fully aware of the importance of these SDGs. Many of its policies regarding the nations development are parts of the implementation of these goals in Indonesia," he concluded.(*)
