"I have asked Novanto to comply with the legal proceedings," Widodo said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo has asked the Chairman of House of Representatives (DPR), Setya Novanto, who is accused of corruption in the E-KTP case, to obey the Indonesian law.

"I have asked Novanto to comply with the legal proceedings," Widodo noted here on Monday.

He stated that the replacement of Novanto from the current position as Chairman of House of Representatives will also follow the applicable regulations.

The regulation on his replacement is noted in Law No 17/2014, which is related to People`s Consultative Assembly, House of Representatives, Regional House of Representatives, and Regional Representatives.

Besides, Indonesia also adopts the Regulation of the House of Representatives No 1/2014, related to the DPR`s Code of Conduct that regulates the resignation and replacement of the chairman.

According to the regulation, the DPR chairman will be replaced from service if he/she dies, resigns, and is dismissed. Additionally, the chairman is dismissed when he/she disobeys the oath of service and the DPR Code of Conduct after the investigation conducted by DPR Court of Honor.

"The country has a method on how to replace the leaders of high state institutions. Thus, we should follow the existing regulations," he remarked.

Novanto, who was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission for 20 days since Nov 17, 2017, is in the State Prison of East Jakarta.

He was accused of being part of the E-KTP corruption case that created a loss of Rp2.3 trillion, or US$170 thousand, in state finances.
