"The funds in KIP should be used in accordance with its functions, namely to buy uniforms, shoes, books, and school bags, and not to buy phone pulse," Jokowi said while visiting State Vocational Senior High School (SMK) 3, here, on Monday.
Flanked by the Education and Culture Minister and the Governor of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), the president symbolically distributed 1,148 KIPs for local students.
KIPs provide Rp1 million for senior high school students, Rp750 thousand for junior high schools, and Rp450 thousand for elementary schools per year.
The money is for the students to buy school stationary, bags, and uniforms.
"Children must study diligently, the study hours should be increased, because your main task is to study," he remarked.
Meanwhile, Jokowi was scheduled to stay overnight on Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), while paying a two-day working visit to the province.
The president and First Lady Iriana departed aboard Indonesia-1 presidential aircraft from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, East Jakarta, on Monday morning, Bey Machmudin, deputy in charge of protocol, the press, and media of the Presidential Secretariat, noted in a statement here on Monday.
Upon arrival in Kupang, the capital of NTT, Jokowi is expected to distribute Indonesian Smart Cards and land certificates to local inhabitants and to deliver a general lecture at the University of Muhammadiyah.
In the afternoon, Jokowi and the first lady will depart for Rote District. He will issue directives during the 2018 national coordinating meeting of Jokowi`s Volunteers Front.
On Tuesday, Jokowi will distribute Indonesian Smart Cards and Hopeful Family Program cards as well as land certificates to the local inhabitants of Rote.
In the afternoon, the president and his entourage will return to Kupang and inaugurate the Raknamo dam project.
