Speaking at Muhammadiyah University here on Monday, he stated that democracy in Indonesia must reflect Indonesian character, which is full of civility and free of insults and curses.
"These characters must continue to be developed. Candidates must not insult each other or practice black campaigning. They must be wiped out from our democratic process," he noted, according to deputy for protocol, press and media of the presidential secretariat, Bey Machmudin.
Jokowi called on all candidates to maintain a healthy competition, so that the elections could go peacefully and smoothly.
"Please compete on achievements, track records, ideas, programs, or plans. I think they should compete on them. Again, our democracy must reflect our character, Indonesian character, which is friendly, polite, and civil," he remarked.
Jokowi declined to comment about the members of his cabinet who will participate as candidates in the elections, because he had so far received no reports officially from them.
"Later, when the letters have been received, I will decide about them. They have not yet come to my desk," he revealed.
A total of 171 regions, including 17 provinces, in Indonesia will conduct elections simultaneously in June this year to elect governors, district heads, and city mayors.
