According to a press statement from the Indonesian Consulate General in Perth, Australia, received by ANTARA here on Tuesday, the cooperation to handle transnational crimes was discussed during a meeting between National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian and AFP Chief Andrew Covin in Perth on Monday.
The top police officers of both countries met in Perth to discuss bilateral issues, including the cooperation agreement on handling transnational crimes.
"Intensive and sustainable communication between the Indonesian Police and AFP can enable us to evaluate the development of cooperation in combating existing transnational crimes," Karnavian remarked.
He noted that close cooperation was required to handle some transnational crimes, such as corruption, child sexual exploitation, terrorism, cybercrimes, human trafficking, and other organized crimes.
Karnavian stated that terrorism is a big enemy due to its impact on the security and prosperity of the country.
The Indonesian Police chief asserted that terrorism is a latent danger that can arise anywhere and at any time and is supported by technological advances and social media.
"Real steps are required to combat transnational crimes," he said, explaining that other challenges and threats being faced are related to the increasing influence of the ideology of radicalism.
"I hope this type of meeting is not merely an exchange of information, but an agreement is reached to implement and strengthen existing cooperation," he explained.
Meanwhile, the AFP chief highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two countries to address new regional security threats.
AFP remains committed to enhancing cooperation with the Police in dealing with transnational crimes.
Both stressed the importance of cooperation at all levels of both Polri and AFP institutions to address transnational crimes.
