Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government has discussed a scheme to accelerate the development of housing for civil servants, Indonesian military, and police personnel.

"For the 2018 project, I have asked the Public Works and Housing Ministry to reach the target of public housing development. Thus, it can gradually reduce the housing backlog, which has reached 11.4 million houses," President Joko Widodo said, in a closed-door meeting on housing development for civil servant, military, and police personnel here, on Monday.

The president noted that 945 thousand civil servants, 275 thousand military personnel, and 360 thousand police personnel are yet to own houses.

In its attempt to meet the demand, the government has sought an alternative funding scheme for house provision, and it could use the government`s non-budgetary fund, he stated.

The president also invited the Financial Services Authority (OJK), state-owned banks and regional banks, the Indonesian armed forces social insurance PT Asabri, and social insurance for civil servant PT Taspen, to discuss the issue.

"I hope that house provision for civil servants, soldiers, and police personnel could be accelerated, in order to meet their basic needs. They can focus on their duties while encouraging its double impact for our economic growth," he remarked.

Also present at the meeting were some cabinet ministers, Military Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, and Police Chief General Tito Karnavian.
