Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Ministry of Education and Culture has tied up with the state-owned lender, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), to facilitate property and house ownership credit for teachers and educational staff especially in the remote regions.

"This is part of efforts for the welfare of teachers, especially for those who still do not have houses," said the Acting Director General of the Ministry`s Teachers and Educational Staff, Hamid Muhammad, on Friday. He said BRI would provide some schemes for teachers who had permanent incomes, because they had to give a guarantee to get the credit facility.

The BRI?s Director of Consumers, Handayani, said that in the first stage, the bank would facilitate property and house ownership credit for 2,000 of the more than 9,000 teachers. The pilot projects were planned in the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and Papua.

She said BRI had established collaboration with a number of developers and the Ministry of Public Works and People`s Housing to ensure good quality housing. The homes would be equipped with internet access as teachers needed fast access to information.

The interest rate on the credit would be five per cent during a tenure period.
