After the inaugural opening ceremony of the ASEAN-China Media Cooperation Forum in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, China, on Saturday, Deputy Secretary General of the ASEAN AKP Mochtan stated that the implementation of the program was a follow up on the cooperation between the ASEAN and China established since the past 15 years, especially in the field of information dissemination.
"I have promoted a three- to six-month-long training and internship program for my fellow journalists, as the same program is usually implemented for only 10 days," he remarked.
The training program aims to provide a broader understanding of political, economic, and socio-cultural conditions in the ASEAN and China.
Mochtan believes the role of the media is crucial in sustaining sound cooperation between the ASEAN and China.
The ASEAN-China partnership was established based on the three pillars of the ASEAN Community: political, economic, and social and cultural endurance. In this case, the media has a role in highlighting interests and gauging the implications of such cooperation.
"Thus, it (training program) can provide an opportunity to journalists to write articles, meet people, and hold discussions with students and university experts, so they will be able to write in-depth reports," he stated.
He noted that the currently, the circulation of news was fast and inevitable, and fake news often spread in society.
With the placement of ASEAN journalists in Chinese media agencies and the internship program for China`s journalists in media institutions in ASEAN countries for three to six months for writing in-depth articles, journalists will be able to counteract fake news that could pose a threat to the ASEAN-China cooperation.
"The program aims to improve the capacity of human resources and understand issues in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Brunei Darussalam, or cities in China," he stated.
In addition, he proposed cooperation for the exchange of information between the ASEAN and Chinese media.
"With the cooperation on the exchange of verified information, we can ward off potential fake news," he affirmed.
The cooperation can be developed by utilizing technology that displays news in an attractive manner in the form of news stories, infographics, blogs, or video.
