Palembang (ANTARA News) - The Youth and Sport Minister, Imam Nahrawi, has said that the venues for the 18th Asian Games in Palembang, South Sumatra, are nearing completion and will be ready well before the event started in August.

The government had set June-end as the deadline for all venues to be completed, the minister said after inspecting the venues for sport climbing and shooting in Jakabaring Sport City on Wednesday.

"By the end of June at the latest, but I am optimistic the deadline could be reached. At the shooting venue, for example, on June 29 there will be a visit of a technical team of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)," he said.

Imam has inspected the installation of sport climbing panels and ensured that all materials were ready.

At the shooting venue, Imam inspected the new arena for skeet and trap category, which overlooked the places of worship for five religions. The main gate of the shooting range stadium overlooked the lake for the rowing venue.

Imam claimed the development of Asian Games venues showed better progress compared to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. "In the Rio Olympics, many venues were yet to be finished after the opening ceremony," he said.

The OCA should appreciate Indonesia for preparing the venues in four years after Vietnam withdrew from hosting the international sport event in 2014.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the South Sumatra committee, Muddai Madang, said all venues would be completed in June. "After Lebaran (Eid al-Fitr), all managers must be ready in the venues," he said.

The Asian Games 2018 are scheduled to be held from August 18 to September 2 in Jakarta and Palembang.
