Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad will make an official visit to Indonesia on June 28 and 29, 2018, which would be his first bilateral visit to Southeast Asian countries, after assuming the position as the prime minister for the second time last May.

He will be accompanied by his spouse Siti Hasmah Mohammad Ali, officials from the Prime Minister`s Office, and Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Mohamad will meet Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), followed by a luncheon hosted by the president, according to a press release from the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He is also scheduled to have a session with the Malaysian community in Jakarta.

The visit will provide a platform for the two leaders to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between both countries.

It would also allow Malaysia to highlight the government`s latest policies and its stand, particularly on issues of mutual benefits.

Furthermore, both Mohamad and Jokowi will have the opportunity to exchange views on regional and global issues, which are of common interest to both countries.

Indonesia is one of Malaysia`s close friends and an important neighbor. In 2017, the total bilateral trade was recorded at US$16.89 billion, an increase of 22 percent compared to 2016, which made Malaysia the seventh largest trading partner globally and the third largest trading partner among ASEAN member states after Singapore and Thailand.

Within just a month of serving as prime minister, Mohamad has made significant policies in the Malaysian government, including cancelling a proposed multi-billion-dollar high-speed railway link to Singapore, which he called a move to save the country`s billions of ringgits. The project is part of the China`s Belt and Road Initiative.

The 92-year-old prime minister has also stated that he would review Malaysia`s membership in the revised Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement led by Japan, and would revive a 1980s policy, under which Japan served as an economic model for Malaysia.

Mohamad also remarked that he wanted to review a proposed Code of Conduct on the South China Sea, which ASEAN and Beijing has been negotiating, The Straits Times reported.
