Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has been elected to lead the Evaluation Committee of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), as noted in a press statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Rome, Italy, received by ANTARA here, Friday.

At the 101st session of the IFAD Evaluation Committee in Rome, Italy, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Rome, J.S. George Lantu was unanimously elected chairman of the committee for the 2018-2021 period.

The Evaluation Committee is an IFAD subsidiary body that plays a vital role in supporting the IFAD Executive Board as a decision-making body for agricultural development projects and rural advancement in 176 IFAD member countries.

Results of discussion and recommendations of the evaluation committee on the implementation of various IFAD funding projects, policy strategies, and financial structures become the main reference to improve its performance.

Indonesia`s election as chair of the IFAD Evaluation Committee demonstrates the support of IFAD member countries for its strong role and commitment to supporting rural development, in particular, with regard to poverty alleviation and food security improvement.

At the 101st session, the IFAD Evaluation Committee also evaluated the positive impacts and challenges of agricultural financing projects in Cameroon and Peru as well as the development of IFAD`s financial architecture.

Since its establishment in 1977 until 2016, the IFAD has authorized more than 1,037 funding projects that have assisted about half a billion farmers in the world.

For the 10th IFAD agricultural development program for the 2016-2018 period, the IFAD aims to disburse loans and grant programs worth over US$3.2 billion.

The cooperation between Indonesia and IFAD, built in 1980, was intensified in 2017 with the opening of IFAD representative offices in the country, which also becomes the regional hub of IFAD for the Southeast Asia and Pacific sub-region.
