Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s top cartoonist Gerardus Mayela Sudarta passed away at 8.25 a.m. on Saturday at the age of 73.

"It is a big loss for Kompas. Until now, no other cartoonist has been equal to GM Sudarta," Budiman Tanuredjo, editor in-chief of national daily Kompas, where Sudarta has worked for since 1967, remarked.

He added that GM Sudarta had been with Kompas throughout the life of the top daily so far.

Although Sudarta had retired since 2005, his works were still published by Kompas until he could no longer work due to his health condition.

"For Kompas Mas (brother) GM was an icon, while, at the same time, he was also a maestro of cartoons for Indonesia. Born on September 2, 1945, his cartoons and ideas sharply portrayed social problems, but they never caused ire on those being criticized," Tanuredjo revealed.

Sudarta will be cremated at Sentra Medika hospital`s crematorium in Cibinong, Bogor, at 10 a.m. on Monday. He is now laid in peace at the Sinar Kasih mourning house in Batu Tulis, Bogor.
