"During the past four years, with God`s help, we have laid down a strong foundation for Indonesia to move forward faster and stronger. I am certain that Prof. KH Ma`ruf Amin is the right figure to stand by me to carry on the struggle," the president, commonly known as Jokowi, noted while introducing his running mate here on Friday.
Jokowi deemed Amin as a complete figure, a wise ulema respected by all Indonesian Muslims, and an individual with a long-standing experience in the parliament, and as a member of the presidential advisory board and the Agency for Pancasila Ideology Education.
"He is also the rais aam (supreme leader) of the Nahdlatul Ulama and chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). It means that he has extensive track record and experience. He shares the same vision as us that as the largest Muslim country, we have to address the issue of poverty and inequality by strengthening the people`s economy," Jokowi noted.
The pair has registered with the General Election Commission at around 9 a.m. local time on Friday.
