"What needs to be reflected during the anniversary celebration of National Transportation Day is the importance of safety, services, and hospitality," the minister remarked.
The minister made the statement in a written address read out by Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola during the National Transportation Anniversary celebration here on Monday.
The minister remarked that despite efficiency ensured during several stages of transportation, it should not reduce the quality of safety in transportation service that is a must and non-negotiable.
Yet services should continue to be improved, including in air transportation services for luggage handling, such as the plan to use online luggage deposit services.
The Ministry of Transportation will evaluate a regulation on online flight luggage deposit service through an application used by the public.
"We will soon draft a provision on the matter in the form of a ministerial regulation and a decision letter (SKEP) of the Air Transportation Directorate General on the utilization of luggage facilities of the flight," Head of the Transportation Ministry`s Air Transport Research and Development Center Mohammad Alwi stated after a discussion titled "Supervision of the Utilization of Unused Passenger Baggage Space in Aircraft" in Jakarta recently.
Alwi urged the directorate general of air transportation to draft the regulation, so that it will not set a negative precedent in the face of the development of technology and applications.
The service is intended to utilize the unutilized baggage quota of a flight passenger to send goods through an application.
The passenger, whose unused luggage quota is utilized by others to dispatch goods, will receive payment in accordance with the application. Such a service that has virtually been running now includes the Travelogic and TIPS services.
Alwi explained that it posed no problem as long as it did not violate the rules, such as of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
"The important aspect is that it does not violate the Annex 17 of ICAO with Ministerial Regulation No. 80 of 2017. Supervision should be conducted while going ahead with the service. The responsibility lies with the Directorate General as a regulator," he remarked.
