Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA News) - Tangerang, Banten, was named among major cities in the Asia-Pacific for pioneering the establishment of Child-Friendly City at the Congress of Major Cities in the Asia-Pacific held in Surabaya, East Java, on September 12-14, 2018.

"We are part of cities and provinces in the Asia-Pacific that are committed to realizing a Child-Friendly City," Head of the Women and Child Protection Division at the Tangerang City Administration Irna Rudiana stated here, Tuesday.

She explained that the Tangerang City Administration currently encourages the fulfillment of children`s rights and child protection through various programs and activities, such as building child-friendly green open spaces and issuing child identity cards.

"As the Tangerang mayor said, the Tangerang City Administration considers children to be Very Important Persons (VIP), as they are the future demographic dividend, who in 2030 will be the drivers of development and compete in the international arena," she pointed out.

In a bid to fulfill children`s rights, Rudiana explained that the Tangerang City Administration had opened maximum access for children to receive education.

"One of the efforts is through the implementation of the Tangerang Smart program in which children can receive free school education for up to 12 years of age. In addition, there is the development of Child-Friendly Schools, which is a combination of healthy schools, environment-oriented schools, friendly schools, and schools that prioritize fulfillment of human rights and freedom from violence," she noted.

In terms of health, the city administration also encourages the realization of facilities for child-friendly health centers that provide nutrition improvement programs to reduce the rates of infant mortality and stunting.

"All neighborhoods in Tangerang also apply clean and healthy lifestyle practices that are supported by the administration," Rudiana noted.

The city administration also taps the children`s interests and hones their talents through the Children`s Creativity Room in almost all areas of Tangerang. The facilities are aimed at improving children`s skills in sports and arts.

Along with the Indonesian Social Care Foundation, the municipality also takes steps to put an end to child labor and child home workers, she added.
